Tap is a fun dance style which was born out of America, it is a huge influence still today, many choreographers and theatre professionals take inspiration from the likes of Fred Astaire. Current day shows in the west end and on tour still use classic old style tap within their choreography. As with all classes we have 4 main levels here at SSD, all of which follow the ISTD syllabi. Examinations from Grades 1-Intermediate are available and are fully recognised by Ofqual and the DofE.
We start with Primary level for Tap classes, these classes are suitable for students aged 5 and above to learn the basic breakdown of tap terminology, there is a class test examination that students can take if they wish to before they progress into the lower grades
Classes for grades 1-3, are formatted to build up knowledge of tap terminology, and build on progressions of the basic exercises, we recommend all dancers studying the first 1-2 grades if they wish to pursue a career in dance. Students may take the graded exams when they are ready before progressing to the next level.
For students wanting push onto a theatre or teaching career these higher graded classes help them to add style to their dance, with hints of Latin, Hip hop, Tango and lyrical. Students progress in technique and performance in these grades to prepare for the vocational levels.
The vocational grades, prepare students for professional full time training and work in the dance industry. All examinations from Grade 6 and above earn UCAS points and are nationally recognised Diplomas.
